Poder Latinx Stands in Solidarity in Calling for Justice in George Floyd Murder

Poder Latinx released a statement today regarding the wave of protests registered this weekend across the nation in reaction to George Floyd’s murder at the hands of Minnesota State Police officers last May 25th, 2020. This statement is attributed to Yadira Sanchez, Co-Executive Director: “Poder Latinx joins in solidarity with the black community throughout the nation at this time of deep sorrow and grief. The tragic murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officers is yet another urgent call for us to continue demanding social justice so that our black brothers will not be murdered on the streets indiscriminately. Our communities have been the victims of systemic racist violence and institutionalized inequality for too long, and the tragic events of this weekend are just a manifestation of the deep anger and frustration at years of inaction of those who are in power. Police brutality cases have continued year after year with no desire by the federal, state, or local governments to make the necessary changes to root out racism in this country’s institutions. We must not allow police departments and the federal government to further militarize our communities as a result of protests or COVID-19 restrictions. We must demand justice, transparency, and accountability and we must do it together. La unión hace la fuerza, united we are stronger.”
