March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, local doctor urges Hispanics to get a colonoscopy

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and Dr. Vanessa Costilla a local gastroentrologist shares the importance of getting a colonoscopy screenings to prevent colon cancer.


Common symptoms of colon cancer are rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, but many may have zero symptoms. Hispanics get fewer screenings than non-Hispanics, Costilla said, due to fear and embarrassment. According to the American Cancer Society, if everyone at age 45 were to get screenings, thousands of lives would be saved yearly.
