NALEO Educational Fund Commends the Passage of the Ensuring a Fair and Accurate Census Act

U.S. House Oversight and Reform Chairwoman Carolyn B. Maloney’s bill is a step in the right direction toward Census reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund today applauded the passage of the Ensuring a Fair and Accurate Census Act in the U.S House of Representatives. U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee Chair Carolyn B. Maloney introduced the bill to enhance the institutional independence of the U.S. Census Bureau and protect the agency against political interference. Chair Maloney introduced the legislation following the release of Committee findings regarding the previous presidential administration’s efforts to undermine the integrity of Census 2020. “We commend the U.S. House of Representatives for enacting legislation that emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the Census Bureau against political interference,” said NALEO Educational Fund CEO Arturo Vargas. “The House’s action also highlights the need to ensure the Bureau fulfills its mission of producing high-quality data which provide the most accurate portrayal possible of our nation’s population.” “We also commend Chair Maloney for her tireless commitment to supporting the U.S. Census Bureau throughout her tenure as Chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. “The Census is the foundation of our democracy. Census data help ensure fair and representative reapportionment and redistricting and are used to ensure the effective allocation of billions of dollars in federal, state, and local funding. We look forward to continuing to work with the U.S. Congress and the Committee to advance measures that will further strengthen the Bureau.”
